A practical washing routine for bras and briefs that protects elastic, cups, and recycled fabrics. Follow these steps to make your underwear last longer.
Quick answer
Wash bras and briefs in cool water with a gentle detergent, skip the dryer, and never wring or twist them. Hand washing is safest for underwire and molded cups, but a mesh bag on a delicate cycle works for most everyday styles. The goal is to protect elastic and fabric structure, not to sanitize with heat.
Why heat and agitation are the real enemies
Elastic breaks down from heat, harsh chemicals, and mechanical stretching. Hot water and dryer cycles accelerate that breakdown, which is why bras lose stretch and briefs lose their shape long before the fabric looks worn. Recycled nylon and elastane are durable but still sensitive to the same stressors as conventional fabrics, so the care rules are similar. The single most effective change you can make is to stop using the dryer for anything with stretch.
Sort by fabric and colour, not just by type
Separate light and dark items to avoid dye transfer, especially with new recycled fabrics that may release some colour in the first few washes. Keep heavily soiled items away from lightly worn ones. If you use a mesh bag, group similar weights together so heavier items do not crush delicate cups. This also prevents hooks from snagging lace or mesh.
Choose the right detergent and dose
Use a mild liquid detergent free from bleach, fabric softener, and enzymes if possible. Softener leaves a residue that coats elastic and reduces its ability to recover, which shortens the life of the bra. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes; excess soap stays in the fabric and can irritate skin. Follow the bottle dose for a small load and reduce it slightly for hand washing.
Hand washing vs machine washing: when to use each
Hand wash any bra with underwire, molded cups, or delicate trim. Machine washing is acceptable for wireless bras, crop styles, and briefs if you use a mesh bag and a delicate cycle with low spin. Never wash bras with towels or jeans, because the heavy agitation distorts cups and stretches bands. If your machine has a hand-wash or wool cycle, that is the closest safe option.
Drying without damage
Lay bras flat to dry or hang them by the centre gore, not by the straps. Hanging by straps stretches them out and can distort the band. Briefs can be line dried or laid flat. Keep everything out of direct sunlight for long periods, as UV can fade colours and weaken fibres over time. If you must speed up drying, use a fan or a low-heat setting with no tumbling.
Step-by-step washing routine
- 1. Close all hooks and clasps: Fasten the bra hooks and any clips before washing. This prevents them from snagging other items and protects the hook eyes from bending. Checkpoint: if a hook is already bent, gently reshape it with pliers before washing.
- 2. Pretreat stains and deodorant buildup: Apply a small amount of mild detergent directly to underarm areas and let it sit for 5 minutes. Use a soft toothbrush on stubborn deodorant residue. Mistake to avoid: scrubbing aggressively, which can pill the fabric.
- 3. Fill a basin with cool water: Use water that feels cool to the touch, around 30°C or less. Add a teaspoon of mild detergent and swish to mix. Checkpoint: hot water will feel warm on your wrist; if it does, add cold water before adding garments.
- 4. Submerge and gently knead: Place bras and briefs in the water and gently squeeze the suds through the fabric for 2–3 minutes. Do not wring, twist, or scrub. Mistake to avoid: letting items soak for hours, which can weaken fibres and set odours.
- 5. Rinse until water runs clear: Drain the basin and refill with cool water. Gently press the water through the fabric until no suds remain. Repeat if needed. Checkpoint: leftover detergent can irritate skin and attract dirt, so rinse one extra time if unsure.
- 6. Remove excess water without wringing: Press the garment between your palms or roll it in a clean towel and press down. Never twist or wring, as this distorts cups and stretches bands. Mistake to avoid: hanging a wet bra by its straps, which stretches them out.
- 7. Dry flat or hang by the centre gore: Lay bras flat on a towel or hang them by the centre gore. Briefs can be laid flat or line dried. Keep out of direct sun for extended periods. Checkpoint: if the bra still feels damp at the band after 12 hours, flip it over to dry the other side.
Product care notes
- Recycled Maternity Bra - Cranberry: This 4-in-1 maternity bra converts from pregnancy to feeding to regular bra to sports bra with a racer back option. The convertible clips and drop cups mean more hardware and seams to protect, so hand washing or a mesh bag is especially important to keep the conversion points working smoothly.
- Recycled Wireless Bra DD+ - Lime: The elastic in this wireless DD+ bra costs 13 times standard bra elastic and is designed to support breast weight without digging or losing shape after washing. Even though the elastic is engineered to recover, hot water and dryer heat will still break it down over time. Cool hand washing helps you get the full lifespan from that investment.
- Recycled Bra Crop D+ - Atlantis: This D+ bra crop uses double layer construction with fabric straps and a high support elastic edge, made from GRS-certified recycled nylon and Oeko-Tex certified materials. The double layer and high-support edge can trap detergent if you use too much, so rinse thoroughly. The recycled nylon benefits from the same cool, gentle care as other stretch fabrics.
